As you begin to plan your breast augmentation, you will have many options to choose from in order to achieve your desired outcome. One of the most important breast augmentation options involves where to place your incisions.

Our plastic surgeons will review your medical history and listen carefully to your aesthetic goals before recommending the ideal incision option to obtain the results you desire. Since the choice of incision option impacts the location and visibility of your scars, this can be a very important decision.

There are three different breast augmentation incision options:

  • Inframammary (at the breast crease)
  • Periareolar (below the areola)
  • Transaxillary (in the armpit)

The inframammary incision is the most commonly used option. Since the incision is hidden underneath the breast crease and well-concealed by clothing and swimsuits, it results in a very discreet scar. This option also provides our plastic surgeons with greater visibility and a more direct approach when working on the breast tissue.

The periareolar incision is made around the bottom of the areola, the colored tissue around the nipple. While this incision is made on a visible region of the breast, it is well concealed by the change in color, texture, and height surrounding the areola. This option enables our plastic surgeons to achieve a very precise formation of the breast implant pocket.

The transaxillary incision is made in the armpit. It is an ideal option if you do not want your scar located anywhere near your breasts.
