In recent years, an increasing number of women in their 50s and older are opting to have breast augmentation. As long as you are in good overall health and have the approval of your primary doctor, there is virtually no upper age limit for breast augmentation. Older women can especially benefit from breast surgery if they have lost volume in the breasts due to the effects of age or past pregnancies.

If you are considering breast augmentation in your latter years, you should take the following factors into account:

Skin health – Your skin must have enough laxity to support your breast implants. If your breast skin has lost some elasticity, you may need a breast lift (mastopexy) in conjunction with an augmentation.

General health – Some older women are in the best shape of their lives. However, others may have medical conditions that can interfere with the healing process. After reviewing your medical history, we can discuss whether or not you are a good breast augmentation candidate.

Mammograms – It is worth considering the impact that breast implants can have on mammograms. While studies show that breast implants have no impact on cancer mortality rates, they can potentially limit the visibility of 3-5% of your breast tissue during screenings. Submuscular placement is usually recommended to improve visibility during mammograms. We can also recommend a local mammogram clinic that is experienced in screening patients with breast implants.
