Recovering from your tummy tuck procedure will take time and relaxation. A tummy tuck is a major surgery. You should be kind to your body during recovery and allow it to heal at its own pace. Each person is different and heals at a slightly different rate, but our Atlanta area patients can expect their recovery to generally proceed as follows:

  • First two weeks – You should take it easy and plan to take at least the first week, possibly two weeks, off from work. You'll leave with a compression garment that will help with swelling. You can expect swelling and bruising in the first few days following surgery. It will begin to subside by week two but can last 6 weeks to 3 months.
  • First four weeks – Life should be getting back to normal by four weeks after surgery. Your swelling should have substantially subsided and you'll be able to return to most normal activities. Although you should avoid strenuous exercise until cleared by your surgeon.
  • Six weeks and beyond – You will really start to see your results at this point, although your swelling may continue to reduce after this. You should be ready to resume your normal daily routine with exercise.

Be sure to follow all of the post-operative instructions that the surgeon gives you. Taking good care of yourself and keeping all of your follow-up appointments are key to achieving your desired results and making sure you have a comfortable recovery.
